During the initial session, the client and counselor will discuss informed consent, confidentiality, and the client's main areas of concern or reason for seeking therapy. The counselor will conduct a thorough and detailed initial assessment to better understand the client's presenting problems and factors affecting the client's functioning. The client and counselor will work collaboratively to create a treatment plan to reduce the client's symptoms and use the treatment plan as a framework to conduct sessions weekly or bi-weekly.
The counselor will meet with the client weekly or bi-weekly, based on the client's needs and severity of symptoms, to build therapeutic rapport and work towards achieving the client's treatment goals. The counselor will monitor the client's progress and will revisit the treatment plan often to ensure that the client's needs are being met.
The client and counselor will continue to meet for as long as the client and counselor feels necessary. If the counselor and client agree that the client has completed the goals listed on their treatment plan and is in a healthy space, mentally, then termination will be discussed. The counselor will provide the client with resources and remind the client that they are always welcome to revisit therapy, if needed.
